West Maui Night Life

Where should we go tonight?

I’ve been a bartender on west Maui for seven years now and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked that question. Usually it comes from a group of  “singles” that’s stuck on a family trip or young couples looking for a fun night on the town. Maui is a small, mellow place. The majority of people visiting are families or retirees, not party animals. But don’t loose hope there are lots of singles, 18 -35 who come to work the restaurants and hotels here. They are some of the most fun, free spirited people you’ll ever meet.

This article is designed as a guide for Maui nightlife from a locals point of view. The following is meant as a guide (not a strict set of rules). Bars are constantly opening and closing and crowds always change. But use this for starters and you won’t be disappointed.

Monday Night

Hard Rock Café

Monday has been Hard Rock night for as long as I can remember, which is funny because there’s not any rock on this night. It’s Reggae night, featuring music from Marty Dread (a great local entertainer). You’ll find a mixture of tourists and locals filling the bar. There is a five-dollar cover charge, but there are some great drink specials and you’ll find it’s worth your money.

Tuesday Night

Moose McGuilicuty

Tuesdays go off and for good reason. It’s dollar drink night (not just beers all the well liquors too). This is definitely a local hot spot, I suggest you get there before ten or you’ll risk waiting in line (it barely moves because no one leaves, so get there early). The atmosphere can be a little “tough” inside. Don’t worry though, show respect to the locals and you’ll have a great night.

Wednesday Night

Santa Fe Cantina

Weds have always been a mellow night on Maui (everyone’s hung over from dollar night). A new “off the map” Mexican restaurant called Santa Fe Cantina is changing that. It’s a small venue and doesn’t really get going until after 11 (that’s when all the locals get off work at various restaurants). If you can’t wait till eleven to start your night, head down the street to the Kimo’s bar. Kimo’s is a restaurant, with a great locals bar scene, the food is ok. Actually it’s a great place to start any of these nights, you’re sure to meet some cool locals and strike up some good conversations.

Thursday Night

Sansei’s Sushi Bar

Ready to sing some karaoke? No? Then lay off the sake or you’ll probably find yourself on stage. Sansei’s is a sushi restaurant in Kapalua (northwest Maui) that re-opens for the late night on Thursday’s, it’s a great fun, classy scene! There’s ½ off sushi (which is delicious) from ten till close. They usually shut the doors around nine thirty, a line builds and then they re-open the doors at ten and there’s a bit of a dash to reserve a table. I like to get there just before nine-thirty, sneak into a table and cocktail until ten, then order my sushi.

Friday Night

Mai Tai Lounge

If you haven’t been to the Mai Tai lounge yet, then you’re missing out. It’s my favorite place to watch the sunset in Lahaina (between six thirty and seven thirty depending on the time of year). The atmosphere is lounge with dj’s spinning cool beats and fun tropical drinks. Try to get one of the three booths on the upstairs deck (best seats in the house). Mai Tai is a great place to chill and enjoy some good company, so make sure you bring the right people.

Saturday Night

LuLu’s @ the Cannery Mall

Saturday’s are Lahaina’s biggest night out. Lots of places have been hot over the years but these days the place to be is LuLu’s. This place cranks! Awesome atmosphere, dancing, dining, Lulu’s has it all! You’ll find a great combination of locals and tourists enjoying themselves. The best part is it’s halfway home for those of you visiting and staying in the Kaanapalii area. But promise me you don’t drink and drive! Your best bet is to take a cab, trust me you’re going to end up having fun and staying longer than you think. Besides a cab only costs about eight bucks. Be safe!

Sundays

Mulligan’s and Merriman’s

Sunday’s is another mellow night (everyone partied at Lulu’s all night). But here are two great places you should checkout - Meriman’s in Kapalua has a great sunset cocktail hour. The atmosphere is very upscale, so know that in advance and dress accordingly. The second place is Mulligan’s at the wharf in Lahaina. Mulligan’s is an Irish dive bar that’s very casual and local, it doesn’t get going till after ten. Sunday’s are usually open mic nights; you’ll hear some great local talent and enjoy real island beats!

For a relaxing vacation filled to the brim with wondrous sights, stunning beaches, and exhilarating recreational activities that will most certainly take your breath away, head to the always popular Hawaiian Island of Maui. Maui is a tropical paradise where your most vacation fantasies can come true, so pack your bags and make your way to this pristine jewel in the Pacific.

When one thinks of the Hawaiian Islands, the first thing that usually comes to mind is the spectacular beaches where all your cares are set free. While Maui is certainly no exception with its amazing stretches of sand scattered throughout the island, the west shore is definitely the place to be for a picture-perfect afternoon. Kaanapali Beach is widely considered one of the best beaches on the island for its memorable snorkeling opportunities at Black Rock while Kapalua Beach is continually rated one of the top beaches in the world for its pristine sand, picturesque views, and excellent swimming and sunbathing conditions.

For a beach experience that extends far beyond the everyday, head to the Hookipa Beach Park on Maui’s north shore for some of the best windsurfing in the world. Famous for its large waves, particularly in the winter, and continuous strong winds, experienced windsurfers can enjoy the ride of their life along the banks of this stunning white sand beach. Surfers should not feel left out, though, as Honolua Bay offers winter waves that should only be tested by experts with nerves of steel.

Outdoor lovers and adventure seekers will certainly want to spend a day exploring the stunning terrain and dramatic views of Haleakala National Park. The park is home to the world’s largest dormant volcano and visitors can scale to the summit of the expansive crater for a look at the sculpted and intense landscape. While the Haleakala volcano is the centerpiece of the park, be sure to explore either the Kuapo Gap Trail for a sampling of the ecological zones surrounding the mountain or the Kipahulu Area for a glimpse of the lush, subtropical rainforests and shimmering waterfalls.

While Maui certainly has many exciting towns that are worth a visit, including Kihei, Wailea, and Haiku, Lahaina is truly something special. One of the most noteworthy attractions is the Old Lahaina Luau, where music, traditional cuisine, and crafts take center stage and provide an authentic island experience unlike anything you could imagine. While in town, also be sure to stop by Front Street for a stroll past restaurants, shops, and boutiques or to pick up a perfect island souvenir.

Visitors spending their time on the west side of Maui near Kihei can visit the Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary to learn more about the state’s official marine mammal. Those on the island between September and May, however, have the distinct advantage of being able to go on a boat tour or whale watching cruise to catch a glimpse of these awe-inspiring creatures as they put on an acrobatic display. While many times Hawaii’s humpback whales can be seen quite easily from the shore, a close up encounter is a thrill that will leave children and adults alike speechless.

With so much to see and do on this busting island, it can be easy to relegate your accommodations choice to the backburner. However, Maui vacation rentals make it easy to enjoy everything you love about this gorgeous island by placing you close to the attractions and features that mean the most to you. Whether you want to stay along the shores of a pristine, sandy beach or atop a breathtaking hill with some of the most amazing views you have ever imagined, a condo or home rental is the perfect way to realize the Maui vacation you have been dreaming about.

During the winter months, Humpback whales love the warm waters of Maui. Each year, anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 whales make the 3,000 mile trek from the frigid waters of Alaska to the wonderful waters of Hawaii.

From mid-December through April or May, you can see them frolicking just off the coast, slapping their flukes, spouting, and leaping out of the water. There is no doubt Humpback whales are impressive to see. At around 45 feet long, they can weigh up to 40 tons.

In 1997, some of the waters around the Hawaiian Islands were designated as the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary – the country’s only single-species federal sanctuary.

Where to enjoy whale watching in Maui

If you want to experience Maui whale watching for yourself, you generally need only to gaze out at the ocean from shore to witness the beauty and grace of these amazing marine mammals. You will find that whale watching in Maui takes very little effort during the winter months.

There is no one time of the day that is best for whale watching in Maui, but they do tend to appear most often when the surface of the ocean is glassy and the tradewinds are calm. For those who want to get out on the water, there are many Maui whale watching options available by boat. From large tours to intimate sailing excursions, you can get a front-row seat for whale watching – along with some other friends, such as the fun-loving Hawaiian spinner dolphin. Some visitors are even brave enough to venture out in kayaks and rafts to view these enormous creatures up close.

To experience Maui whale watching from solid footing, there are many points around the island that are particularly well known for their whale watching vistas. Try visiting one of these, and don’t forget your binoculars.

McGregor Point

On the way to Lahaina, just before the tunnel, is a great place to enjoy whale watching in Maui. Find a safe place to pull over around mile marker 9 for a great vantage point.

Outrigger Wailea Resort

As a public service, the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary has installed a public telescope at the resort, along the Wailea coastal walk. Stop here and enjoy Maui whale watching on the south shore.

Olowalu Reef

On the Honoapiilani Highway, between McGregor Point and Olowalu, you can enjoy Maui whale watching. From this area, you can see the whales leaping out of the water as they frolic. Be careful, though – traffic can come to a screeching halt as excited whale watchers abandon their cars in the road and run to the water’s edge. If you stop here, please take a moment to pull your car out of traffic.

Puu Olai

A vantage point on top of the cinder cone overlooking Makena Beach, this tough climb offers the best vantage point for shoreside Maui whale watching. You can see them dodge Molokini Crater and enjoy the waters of the Alalakeiki Channel, between Maui and Khoolawe.

If you are staying in one of the many resorts along Ka’anapali Beach, you may even be able to just relax on your balcony and witness the majesty of these amazing sea creatures.

Wherever you decide to go whale watching in Maui, you will not be disappointed by their grand splendor and majestic grace.

Charles Joseph asked:

Maui Timeshare Rentals have been escalading in popularity in the past few years after the island of Maui was found to be a heaven on earth for travelers. For the past few years it has claimed many accolades one of them being “the best island in the universe” with gorgeous white sand, and warm water it doesn’t get much better than Maui. For people who are involved with Maui Timeshare Rentals the time has never been better to visit as many times as possible. For people who have been to Maui before these are some of the main attractions that will make anyone’s trip enjoyable.

If you and your family consider yourself active two of the most popular things to participate in while visiting the island of Maui is to bike around the island, the island of Maui is one of the most environmental friendly islands in the world with paths that make possible to bike from the east side of the island to the west side. These bike trails normally take a long and scenic route along the gorgeous Hawaiian shores. Another popular tourist attraction on the island is going diving or snorkeling. There are shops all over the island where you can learn to scuba dive or snorkel. There are half-day, day, and two-day ventures that people can participate in. If you aren’t totally down for getting to the water all the way many of these expedition boats have glass bottoms so that people who prefer to stay in the boat have a great experience as well.

Another popular tourist attraction when people are visiting the island of Maui is all of the eclectic shopping the island has to offer. There are hundreds of little shops all over the island to find anything you need from trip essentials like toothbrushes, to magnets to give friends from home, or even a Hawaiian shirt if you feel inclined. The island has all different types of shops like art shops, international shops, and even malls. Many of these shopping areas have home made artifacts that you can’t get anywhere but on the island, there is beautiful Hawaiian artwork, glass blowing, and farmers markets where you can purchase anything your little heart desires.

If you love animals and you are interested in Maui Timeshare Rentals during the months of October through April you may be in luck, during this time hundreds of Humpback whales are along the shores and out at see giving birth to their babies. These magnificent creatures come to Maui to give birth in safe environments. There are many beautiful things to see and do in Maui, but by far, this is one of the most beautiful and breathtaking. Imagine sailing along side a beautiful Humpback whale with your family in one of the most beautiful vacation destinations in the planet? It doesn’t get much better than that.

Joel Mclaughlin asked:

There are very few vacations across the world that offer as much opportunity for adventure, excitement, and relaxation as Hawaii does. Surfing is perhaps one of the most popular pastimes vacationers and locals alike engage in during the summer months, but there are many other activities you can enjoy throughout the year as well. One of the most beloved islands to visit in Hawaii is Maui, particularly famed as being a “melting pot” of rich diversity and culture. Maui is the home of many sandy beaches, sweeping golf courses, extensive hiking trails, and exotic rainforests. It’s a beautiful island beloved by honeymooners, anniversary couples, families of all sizes, and lone travelers seeking exploration. For all of the tourists that visit this island each year, there is a substantial number of vacation rental properties that can comfortably and affordably accommodate just about everyone.

Kaananpali, Maui is a splendidly diverse city that hosts all of the best vacation activities Hawaii has to offer. With little more than 2,000 residents, this small city contains approximately six square miles of beaches, horseback riding trails, tropical trees, and oceanfront property. Lahaina, the capital of Hawaii, is nearby with opportunities to delve deeper in the state’s rich history by visiting the museum or taking a tour through the town. Resorts, rental condos, townhouses, and homes for rent are some of the most popular vacation properties that visitors use for a trip to Kaananpali. There are rental properties available at great prices in both Kaananpali and Lahaina.

Kihei is another city many tourists flock to when vacationing in Maui, Hawaii. The population of Kihei is larger than that of Kaananpali with the number of year-round residents amounting to just under 18,000. Kihei proffers miles of beachfront property that can be rented at incredibly reasonable prices when compared to less hospitable, standard hotels in the same general area. Although Kihei is a great destination for anyone in search of fun, the properties in this area are particularly ideal for families and other large groups. Three-bedroom (and more) condos, homes, and an assortment of resort options are available for negotiable durations of time, so you’ll have the choice of how long you’d like your trip to last.

Wailea’s population fits snuggly between Kaananpali and Kihei at approximately 6,500 annual residents. There are several resorts that line the beaches of Wailea, as well as a plethora of privately owned vacation rentals. These properties easily range among homes, villas, condos, and even townhouses large or small enough to accommodate any group, from a growing family to a retired couple. The majority of these properties can be found on or very near to the beautiful white beaches of Maui, so virtually all of your adventures will be within walking distance of your vacation home. With all of the great activities Maui offers, as well as fair, comparable prices in vacation rental properties, you could be only an airplane ride away from experiencing the trip of a lifetime.
